The 5 best dollar slices in New York
We've all been there. We're hungry, likely a bit sloshed, and the only grub within eyeshot is the dreaded dollar slice. Do we dare? You're damn right we do, because in New York, even our cheapest pizza is better than most cities' best. Here are five spots around town where you can get solid slices for just a buck.
2. Bros (32 St. Marks Place): The bargain 'za chain boasts locations across the city, but for the most consistent slices, head to the St. Marks Place outpost, which turns out big-as-your-head slices with a crisp, bready crust.
99¢ Fresh Pizza (542 9th Ave): There are plenty of shops with similar names (see 99¢ Fresh Hot Pizza and Hot Fresh Pizza 99¢—confused yet?), but this one has the best crust-sauce-cheese ratio of the bunch.
Joey Pepperoni's (222 1st Ave): Unlike many of its dollar-slice brethren, this local chain fires their fold-ups directly in the pizza oven, rather than setting them on screen racks. This gives it a nicely snappy crust to top with surprisingly flavorful sauce and fresh mozz.
Roll and Go (570 8th Ave): 99 pennies are worth it for a thick, tender crust that holds up to pools of sweet marinara and cheese. Significantly less bready than its competitors.
Percy's Pizza (190 Bleecker St): This Bleecker Street pizzeria is regularly touted not only one of the best dollar-slice purveyors in the city, but even worthy of contending with real-deal New York pies, thanks to its creamy mozzarella, crushed-tomato sauce and char-blackened crust.
